About Concrete Jungle

Concrete Jungle is a solo card game about free-running by Austin Charlie (acharlie1377 on BoardGameGeek), entered in the 2022 Solitaire Print and Play Contest, where it placed 19th overall. You are an ape that has just escaped from poachers and must cross the rooftops of a strange city to reach the trees before you are caught.

What makes it worth printing is the double-sided deck. One face of every card is a stretch of rooftop, a 5x7 grid of run, swing, blocked and midair points; the other face is a movement skill such as Leap, Run or Kong Leap. The same deck is your map, your hand and your timer. Five apes and three game lengths (16, 32 or 48 cards) add replay value.

How to play in one minute

  1. Pick an ape, deal four map cards in a row, draw four skill cards and place your active cube at the left of the map.
  2. Each turn play one action skill (plus any reflexes) and move your cube along the points exactly as the card says, or scramble: lose 1 lead, bury a card and make one basic move.
  3. If a movement ends in midair, resolve freefall: land on a solid point or drop off the bottom of the map and get caught.
  4. At the end of the turn adjust momentum, slide the map left and add new cards, then the pursuers advance: too few cards in play costs you 1 lead.
  5. You lose when your lead reaches 0. You win by moving past the right edge of the last map card once the deck is empty.
